Looking forward to Lights out Liverpool but want to know what you can do everyday to help? Read through our top ten tips and make your life greener.

1). A load of scrap

Rather than grabbing a new piece of A4 or a new notepad, why not write it on some scrap paper? Make a pile of all those old letters, print outs or envelopes and write on the back of them instead.

2). Shut it down

Remember to leave TV's and computer's on standby and you could save 1.1% of the total energy you use.

3). Tea for one

Instead of filling the kettle to the brim when you make a brew, think about the energy you're wasting. Every morning try to remember to only boil enough water for yourself.

4). D.I.Y insulation

Each time you switch the radiator on a huge amount of heat escapes out of the room. An easy way to keep your self warm and toasty is to put some tin foil behind the radiator. This way the heat will bounce back into the room so you wont have to turn the heating up each night. By installing a cavity wall you can save a massive 14% of the total energy you use.

5). Put a lid on it

All those randomly sized saucepan lids lurking in the back of your kitchen cupboard were made for a reason. Cooking with a lid on traps heat and steam within the pot, meaning you can cook on a far lower heat and, most importantly, reduces the overall energy required by up to 90%.

6). Have a light bulb moment

Switching to energy-efficient light bulbs is easy. Fitting an energy saving light bulb will save 0.1% of your total energy use.

7). Cover up

If you feel the chill on a cold winters night why not dip into the wardrobe and pull out a thick jumper. You can still have the heating on but with a warm pullover you won't need to waste extra energy. Turning the thermostat down by 1 degree centigrade will save 4% of the total energy use.

8). Stop tap measure

This is obvious. Loads of water gets wasted when we leave taps running. So next time you wash-up or brush your teeth make sure you turn the tap off. This could save up to 5 litres a minute!

9). Stop the drip

Imagine collecting all the water that drips from a tap in your house over a month. It builds up more than you think. It's estimated up to 90 litres of water a week is wasted. So fix leaking taps and make sure they're always fully turned off.

10). Charge up

Purchase rechargeable batteries instead of disposable ones. Not only is it far cheaper in the long run, but it is also better for the environment. The energy required to produce a disposable battery is on average 50 times higher than the energy it gives out!
